I love this photo because it demonstrates appropriate editing.

I made a lovely image of a beautiful woman. I could have been a purist, said DONE! and handed it over. Or I could have given her the 'COSMO' edit and airbrushed her until she looked twenty again. But that would have obliterated everything that makes her unique and beautiful, in my opinion. Instead, I chose to enhance rather than cover up. It was a spa visit for the photo really.

We are all so critical of images of ourselves. I don't know if this is our airbrushed cultural mentality or just that we don't take the time to study ourselves and each other until we are frozen within a frame. But sometimes a photo can seem a little too real, a bit too 'Hi-Def'. My philosophy of photo editing is simply to dust off that top layer of an image. You know, that one that makes us wrinkle our nose up and start counting our flaws. I want to remove that layer to get to the one underneath that makes us smile and say, " I look great/ beautiful/ handsome. That's my favorite picture of me ever!" When I hear that, I know that I have done my job.

Wahine's Take Back Their Title!!

I followed the Folly Beach Wahine Dragonboat Team for the 2010 Dragonboat Festival. It was such an amazing experience to be surrounded by such an amazing team of people all focused on a common goal. To take back their winning title.

This was their third year paddling in the race. After not secruing victory last year due to a change in regulations, they were in top form, ready to regain what had been taken from them.

It is incredible to me how many people it takes to comprise a Dragonboat team. Twenty members on the water; drummer, steersman, paddlers, with alternates and support back on land. This is no quaint intimate gathering. It is an all out mob of people!

This particular mob of surfers and beach lovers was racing for a member of their group, Vicky Horres. Known around Folly Beach and to each other as Ya-Ya (Greek for grandmother). In years past they raced because she had beaten the cancer that tried to take her down. After getting to know her, I'd say she didn't just beat it but kicked it's a** from here to Tuscan. But this year was different. The cancer that she sent packing twenty five years ago didn't stay in Tuscan. This year they raced for her fight, her passion, for her life.

Their competition was no match for the inspiration that was back on the shores of the Ashley River... and, I suspect, the fire of seeing victory slip through their fingers last year. This year was different. They fought for life...

... and they won.

Nutty

I've been feeling like I have been neglecting my child, Peanut, in the midst of this whole puppy fostering business. I have been working like crazy and taking care of the little ones and all of that has left little Nutty time.
I woke up early on this lazy Sunday and Nutty and I finally got to catch up. The overcast skies made the light as lazy as we were, which is perfect for photos. There is little doubt she is a photographers dog. When she sees the camera in my hand she wags her tail and smiles... not kidding. So it can take a bit of finagling to get snaps of real moments. She is too cute not to share these! Enjoy!

I met the incomparable Alyson Bailey only a few short weeks ago, but have been undeniably changed by her passion, drive and multi-tasking ability. She began with an idea almost a year ago of a website that would feature what's great about Charleston; the people, places and events in a fresh new way. When I met Alyson, just a few days after the launch, it all just clicked. A kindred Lowcountry spirit to be sure. By the end of our conversation I felt like we'd been friends for years. A whole new me... well, sort of

I had a quick photoshoot with my friend Ameilia Philips-Hale at Kudu coffee downtown this morning. I was in desperate need of a headshot of some projects that I have been into lately. What do you think of these?

The thought of getting a headshot done made my stomach churn.... I am on the other side of the lens for a reason. I can say that I have a new found compassion and sympathy for the comfort level of my clients in front of my lens.
I have long admired how Amelia and her husband Dan capture the essence of real people. After being award winning photojournalists out in the big wide world, they began a wedding photography business based in the idealic wedding destination of Charleston, so they are well familiar with working with all types of people and situations. Not to mention, they are funny ( a photography requirement in my book). They have a sense of how to relax you and get you laughing right from the start that makes the whole process easier.

I've taken on the challenge of fostering 3 puppies and am writing a blog about the experience. It's chock full of day to day anecdotes and information about raising/fostering puppies. An evening at Saks

In a strained economy non-profit organizations feel the pinch in big ways. They must work twice as hard to just keep up with current plans, let alone expand programing. This week's news of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra shuttering it's doors for the remainder of this season was a harsh reminder of what can happen when the community doesn't rally to support organizations that do so much to aid our collective growth and development.

The Center for Women is as creative as I have seen, by way of creating unique events... and prolific too! There is at least one event within the community per week and the women at the helm are pro's. They don't even look like they are breaking a sweat! Partnering with businesses and stand-outs in the community for varied programs is a way to open up new audiences and gain exposure.

Tonight's event was heald at Saks Fifth Avenue, downtown Charleston. Carol Perkins of Harry Barker spoke about how her business began and became what it is today - an International Luxury Dog Accessory Brand. Harry Barker was born inspite of and even because of a rare brain tumor, years ago, that took her back to the begining where she could start over - this time, doing what she loves.
The interactive portion of the evening was the Trish McEvoy demonstration and make overs at the beauty counter. Followed by - shopping at Saks! A portion of tonight's sales will go to the Center for Women. And with thirty + women in attendance, one can hope that will go a long way to assuring that women's development events at the Center can continue.

All in all a smashing success... even if I didn't win the Harry Barker goody basket for Peanut.

Had a fun time with Aldwin and his fiance Christine on downtown this weekend. I'll be shooting their wedding in the fall. Now, usually if you are gonna shoot a wedding, an engagement session or bridal portrait session is first in line. So why was I taking pictures of Aldwin?

The short story is... Christine entered him into the PETA "Sexiest Vegetarian" contest on a lark. He was one of 1000 entries and he's made it to the top 10! Go Aldwin! The grand prize is A vacation to Maui.... they have a wedding coming up.... I suspect that might make a nice honeymoon.

Oyster Roast 2010

Saturday night I headed out for a bit of fun on the town at the Pet Helpers 9th Annual Oyster Roast. I love the friendly atmosphere of a Charleston Oyster Roast. Everyone always seems to act like you've been friends forever who haven't seen each other in a while. Nine years ago a Pet Helpers benefactor turned the tragedy of a losing a pet into a way to further the mission of Pet Helpers by starting this annual event. I can't think of a better way to look at life then to use difficult situations to mulitply joy and life tenfold. Thank you for the inspiration! I heard through the grapevine that there were 450 people at this year's event. Thanks everybody for supporting the organization that brought me my little Peanut!

Staying True

I had the chance to meet and photograph Ms. Jenny Sanford this morning at her first talk and public interview in the Lowcountry, that she considers home, since her recent book tour. The Center for Women and the Friends of the College of Charleston Library partnered up to bring her to an eager audience to speak about her life, past and present, as well as to sign a few copies of "Staying True" her new book.

An interesting and diverse crowd gathered in the C of C auditorium to hear the former First Lady of South Carolina present her thoughts on how to stay true to yourself when it seems that all the world is vying for a piece of you. She spoke candidly of raising four young boys against a backdrop of expectations and formal traditions and how she navigated the changes her life has brought.

She also sat down with Jennett Alterman of The Center for Women for a discussion about her thoughts on women's equality, women in politics, and the culture of South Carolina that has led us to be 50th in the nation for women in government. While acknowledging hurdles, she noted the climate is indeed changing for women in business and political positions of power. Positive change in any area is possible, if you stay true to yourself.

Surfing the Runway

Ever had one of those nights that you come home, crumple into a chair, happily exhausted and think to yourself... "That was fun! Can't believe I almost skipped that one... ZZzzzz... "? That's a pretty accurate description of my internal dialog last evening after attending "Surfing the Runway". I almost missed this fashion show/ benefit for Surfer's Healing {www.surfershealing.org} because I was recovering from a full weekend and a worn out trigger finger (yeah, all you wedding photogs out there know what I mean! ) Anyway, I figured that I could peel myself up and at least grab a few snaps for a local publication. After all it was going down only a few minutes from my home. So off I went... A few snaps, a runway show, MTV's MADE and an after party later I finally made it that few minutes back home.

Just a quick message today to say hello! I have tons of things to post, as it seems that I have been everywhere with my camera lately... and am in the planning and preparation for another whirlwind but I wanted to share a favorite little project that I just finished...

This is Duke. He is a very handsome, shiny, black, full grown (weighing in at around 150 lbs.) though still rather young, Great Dane. This is an original unedited photo, and a crappy one at that. I never show my originals, to me that's like a lady telling her age ... it just isn't done. But this time around I think it'll be okay. I was scrolling through my images and suddenly stopped on this one. There was something about that silhouette that stood out to me. But the lighting and composition left a bit to be desired... sooo as they say in photography, when in doubt - cut it out. Crop out anything that doesn't add to the image. As I said, I am not fond of anything other than Duke's silhouette so I cut away everything but him! And I was left with:

A click of the mouse here, a turn there, a crop and a doodle later.... Voila! Personalized stationary with a twist!

Paws Go Red

Sunday afternoon proved to be the perfect day to shake off the gloom of winter. One of the first times mercury rose into the 60's caused droves of people and their pets to descend on James Island County Park. Fortunately Pet Helpers and The American Heart Association partnered up for a day of fun day in the sun with health screenings, a walk, fun contests and prizes for pets and their owners as a reminder that dogs are not only our best friends but can make our lives healthier too!

There were contests for biggest and smallest dog...And best costume...I have a hunch that the judges accepted bribes...There was a walk to promote heart health... I was on hand taking Pet and Owner portraits... And of course, no event is complete or successful without a final random, heart-shaped, group gathering in a large open field....

Thank you Pet Helpers, The American Heart Association, and MUSC for making this day happen! I had a blast... And I have a hunch that in the future this day will be remembered as the "First Annual Paws Go Red".... so I'll see you there next year!

to catch a snowball

I think it's funny that just the other day I posted the wonderfully warm and summer-y pictures of Peanut... because we just had a strange occurance here in Charleston... snow. I've been here for seven years and this isn't the first time that it has snowed, but it's the first time that I have seen it stick. Fun! Here this morning, gone by noon. Perfect!

Yeah, go ahead Peanut, sniff the concrete... 'cause that's what's different about this situation.

Nutty and I have been anxiously awaiting warmer weather so that we can get back on our usual schedule of walks and dog park visits. We have had it with the drizzly, icky-ness that has hung around for far too long. There was a tiny break in the weather, so I bundled up 3 layers deep and off we went!

I am always amazed at the dogs that love the water no matter the temperature. It could be turning into a pond colored/flavored 'Slushy' from the weather and some dogs will still chase that ball. Mac is one of those dogs. The ball is all that matters. If he were human, I suspect he'd be one of the greats at any sport he chose... The term obsessed could apply to this case. So much so that he would plunk down his prized pink rubber ball in front of the nearest feet he could find. No need to look any higher than the knees, no sir. Anybody who could get that ball to the water was good enough for him... a true equal opportunity retriever!

After growing up with pets, I was surprised at how strongly I now wanted to be involved with pet rescues, specifically Pet Helpers, when I adopted Peanut into my family. I have had the best time photographing charity events for Pet Helpers and the rescues themselves. Which is why I am so happy to announce that I will be doing Pet and Owner Portraits at their "Paws Go Red" event in conjunction with the Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" Campaign.

Meet Goldie:I was feeling a bit creative yesterday so I stopped by Pet Helpers, camera in hand to meet a few new friends with whiskers. I'd like to introduce you to two of my new friends!This hot little mama reminded me of my own little Peanut when I saw her, she's quiet but not hard to get to know. A lady never tells her age, but my guess is three-ish. She wears her age well on her petite Lab frame. On top of her good looks, she's got a great personality. I suspect she'd be a great cuddler.

Being a huge Ceasar Millan (Dog Whisperer) fan I have to say, this little lady has all the right energy.

It took all of my willpower not to scoop her up myself and to just trust that she has a family that is just waiting to love her to pieces. So go say hello, she just might be the one for you.

Dog Trials

I have been thinking of signing Peanut up for dog agility for a while now. She is such a smarty pants that I thought it would be good for her. She gives me these looks like, "If I had aposable thumbs, I'd do this myself, but I don't ... so I'll just sit here smiling at you until you figure it out." Needless to say, she's energetic and bright. So I went to a meet for Lowcountry Dog Agility in West Ashley. I had no idea! The dogs are amazing! Such intensity and determination! Here are a few of my favs from the Lowcountry Dog Agitlity Trials.

Thanks Holly for the primmer on dog agility! She saw that I as a bit lost durring the frestyle portion and gave me a mini-tutorial. Those little guys are fast!

one candle is enough...

Birthdays give me heartburn. This is surprising to most who know me. For a person who enjoys thoughtful contemplation, birthdays (the traditional time for such introspection) that my own birthdays are cause for such anxiety is perplexing. My guess is that birthdays cause me to look outside of myself instead of focusing inside... I have used January 13th as a day of comparison;

It's too close to Christmas, not like a June birthday which has no other festive competition. Humph! I am one year older, what do I have to show for it? Ugh! Am I doing as much with my life as Betty? She discovered a cure for cancer, is single-handedly saving the rain forest, has a pack of rescue dogs, has more Facebook friends than I do... and she is two years YOUNGER than me. Aaahhh!

I am (blank) years old and I still feel insecure and unsure that I am doing enough, wait, I am unsure that I AM enough. When will I be?

I had a wonderfully deep and profound conversation with a friend today about all of this wonderfully icky stuff that my birthday is bringing to the surface. Armed with nothing but oversized coffee mugs we sat down to tackle the issues. It was a long talk. She suspended her judgement and encouraged me to do the same... and then she shared her thoughts as only those truly insightful friends can be...

In a bright sunny room a candle can never know how bright it is, because there is light all around it. This is a world of duality and comparison. Light can only be known and appreciated when in comparison to dark. Just like wet vs. dry, or hot vs. cold. You can only know yourself in comparison to that which you are not. You need the dark for your light to show up.

So let's look at this comparison thing again...

Not next to anything else I am forced to see me for me, compared to me...
I am following my dreams, maybe not perfectly, but I am headed in the direction of my dreams. I am better today than I was yesterday, because that's what I choose. I am making better eating choices than I did last year.... and on and on.

So the image of the birthday cake today is to remind me to look at me in comparison to me, not against all the other bright and shining candles out there... to be comfortable with the dark, even if it does seem stark. And that one candle was enough.... enough to light up that yummy chocolate cake.

Meet Nelson...

This is Nelson.I have a thing for gentle giants... so I just couldn't help following this lion looking big guy around with my lens for a few minutes when I spotted him on my latest adventure to the dog park.

Nelson is a seven year old Newfoundland. I really wish that I could have gotten a snap of my tiny little kiddie pool pup next to this Olympic retriever. It's no exaggeration that his head is about the same size as all of my little Nutty.I think his dad could throw that stick until his arm fell off and still, Nelson would bring it back for another go round.

The amount of water that he carries in his coat after a fetch is... well, let's just say that I thought it was raining. And I had to be careful of my gear because his timing was impeccable! He'd wait 'til he was 'in range' and then he'd let it fly! That is one happily wet dog. Thanks for letting me snap a few shots of ya, Nelson. You'll have to give me a few pointers on my doggie paddle next time I see you out there. Happy swimming!

Christmas Delight

I wish that I could go back in time and see Christmas again with this much enthusiasm. My past few Christmases have been a bit lack-luster. I think of all the extra items on my to do list and all the parties I have to dress for, buy for and attend and before I realize what hit me I am slumped in a chair, exhausted. But to feel the way this little girl did about Santa.... I dare say we could all use a bit of Christmas delight.

After the squeals of glee over Santa's Village and the lights of the Christmas trees, we jaunted outside in the chill to a little cobblestoned side alley. (I just love Charleston!) The light was great and I was so excited to begin shooting... and then I realized that my little subject was enraptured with the stones! Being only four years old, there's quite a bit about our world that she hasn't encountered just yet.

Emily, I can't tell you how glad I am to have captured your first encounter with cobblestones. May all of your experiences in this life bring you such joy!

I was looking over my website the other day, just making sure things were in order, when I noticed an inadvertent discrimination... To my shock and surprise I realized that my gallery of 'pets' displays only dogs! *gasp!*

A walk in the park

Here are a few of my favorite images from a recent afternoon spent in the park with two rambunctious little boys, Holden & Oliver. It's the holiday season, but unless a snow cone machine short-circuits, we'll never see anything like snow in Charleston. So Jeanine suited the little men up in holiday sweaters on a rare chilly afternoon and I set out to make the images look as autumnal as possible. I rather like the outcome....

I had such fun! The best thing about photographing kids is that I get to make funny faces and roll around on the ground and basically, act like a kid! As I always say, it's not been a successful shoot unless I go home with straw in my hair!

Fido's Frolic {on Folly}

Today was a blast running around with a large pack of furry friends for the first annual "Fido's Frolic" at Folly Beach. An afternoon of running around on the beach with dogs of all shapes and sizes, oh the fun that was had. The event was to benefit Pet Helpers, the shelter that saved my beloved Peanut....

Beach Birthday

Something Old into Something New

It's the height of wedding season in Charleston. I have been attending a lot of weddings lately, camera in hand... ready for action. But as luck would have it, it seems that all weddings have the same action... different faces, same pictures.

Like many situations we photogs find ourselves in, after a while you begin to think to yourself... "If I have to take one more boring, ordinary picture of this scene just so the client will be happy, I won't be able to look at myself in the mirror tomorrow."

So at the reception of a recent assistant gig, I had a little fun with the dance floor. I chose the dance floor because, in my opinion there's no image more awkward than Uncle Ernie frozen in mid Chicken Dance.

For these I created a bit of motion with reduced shutter speed. It's tricky to balance capturing just enough focus with just enough motion to convey the scene, but keep it intact. It's prone to a LOT of throw away images, but I think that the reward is well worth it.

These are my best so far, as I fine tune the details. I'd love to know if they are only interesting to the easily bored photographer or if this technique is viable as an alternative to the typical static dance shots... So, comment away...

Sunshine Wedding

Some people seem to go through life with the sun always shining on them. I love meeting people like that because I feel that when I am near them, the sun is shing on me too. Ashley & Clay were that sunshine couple. I knew it before I even met them by the buzz around their arrival for their nuptuals.

How appropriate that the sunshine couple chose black white and yellow as their colors on this sunshiniest of days. Enjoy a few suny snaps of the day:

Since leaving my post at the Charleston Center for Photography I seem to be the busiest that I have ever been! Catching up on projects was the original goal, with what I thought would be free time but I have had so many new opportunities arise that I am trying to keep up. From covering Charleston Arts events and shooting weddings to assisting another local photographer, building my very own brand new website and getting a new dog I have been hopping. And let me tell you, I am lovin' every minute of it! I am taking a breather today to blog about it all, mostly because my days are such a blur and when things settle I want to remember what went down! So look for much more, so much more in the very near future... until then here are a few fun images of the new addition, Peanut!

Ever have a meal that looks so beautifully delicious that you just stare at it. You don't just dive into that sort of meal... no. You savor it. I had that type of moment today when preparing my simple lunch of soft boiled egg, Jarlsburg cheese and crusty baguette. And my sparkling water with mint and sweet peach was so refreshing I had to take this picture. I have been on the move, eating without noticing for far too long. Today was my return to paying attention.

Paying attention is delicious.

So I have the most amazing opportunity to take the Photojournalism 1Day Workshop taught by JT Lock (4time Military Photographer of the Year...) at CCforP. At the end of the class we have an assigment and JT so generously set a date that we can come back for a review and critque of our work. So this is it I have my shot to go to another level... to take it to the limit. It's my chance to get out of my comfort zone and take my photography skills out for a spin and see what those puppies can really do....

And what do I choose as my subject?! My obsession. My daily passion. Muddy Waters Coffee Bar!!! Oh, well. Better luck next time.

I did learn a lot by putting myself in the position of documenting things as they happen.

It was interesting to see what happens when you wait. Make no mistake, I am sure Photojournalism has plenty of action and excitement, just not this time. But in my experience it was more like an all night steak out on a quiet rural street. Sitting at the ready for something, anything to happen. Waiting in anticipation of something happening is more the rule then the exception, I dare say.

I think the expectation of many a budding photographer is that they need only work on their photographic skills and then the world will magically unfold all around them and wait for them to photograph it. But life is funny isn't it? So often it's happening at breakneck pace when we can't capture it And of course, it moves along at a snails pace when we are all strapped in and ready.

That was my biggest lesson during this assignment. Moments when I felt unready were the times when the most interesting moments occured. And when my camera was at the ready, the wind stilled and it seemed that all motion stopped. And so, I waited...

We had a blast today hosting a handful of 1st and 2nd graders with the Roper St. Francis Learning Center Day Camp for an afternoon of photography fun. Dan Hale and Amelia Philips Hale took all of the coolest things that you can do with cameras and put them all into one jam packed afternoon. In the end I am not sure who had more fun; the kids or us! Sunday Golf

Had fun this weekend at the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity 14th Annual Golf Tournament! It was held at Osprey Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island. There was a little excitement that day as the "Hole in One" BMW was won by Ginny on hole #11. An unprecedented happening, as this has never happened in the history of the event! It was unfortunate that the BMW crew left the premises before I could get a shot of the winner with her new car. But she was a great sport about the whole thing, methinks it was because she was in shock!

This year's tournament was to specifically fund the first two story house that Sea Island Habitat has ever built. I haven't heard the final numbers yet, but I think that I can say, based upon the turnout, it was a success. Thank you to all that supported the Tournament and there-by the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. And to all of you that missed it, there's always next year! And Congratulations Ginny on your new BMW!

Here are a few snaps from a recent California trip. The trip had been impromptu and so my planning went into the business side of things, so for my layover time I was winging it. My outdoor assignment turned out to be a record breaking 103 degrees only a few days before, albeit that was four hours south, just outside of Fresno. But I am sure you can imagine my surprise when I arrived in San Fransisco to 50 degree weather! Plan or no plan, 1st on the agenda was to buy a jacket!!! I called a friend of mine who travels often and simply asked, "Ever been to Frisco?". I was so relieved to hear that she not only had been there, but actually had family there! Being familiar with the city she gave me a few suggestions off the top of her head and I was off!

The only problem was I was traveling alone and have been known to have navigation issues... So instead of trying to pack in a full tourist itinerary, I took the train in to the middle of the city, I mean dead center.... and just wandered. It was wonderful to see with new eyes. I don't think I managed to get a single San Fran icon, (even though Levi's began here, I don't think the neon sign I snapped has any significance) but I enjoyed myself anyway.

Here are a few of my favorites from the day...

A quick check of the time...I was taking pictures along the way of street signs as litteral bread crumbs... if I got lost I could follow my pictures backwards!

All in all it was a beautiful city and I would love to go back again someday... with a plan perhaps.

It's In the Bag '09

A favorite annual event of mine is the Center for Women's Purse Auction. What could be better than friends, handbags and cake? Friends, handbags, and cake for a good cause! It's held at Waterfront Gallery every year in late Spring and for the past few years I have had this in my day planner before I have noted my own birthday party! Economic times are tough this year and non-profits are feeling the pinch severely. And in life's typically ironic fashion, their services are more vital now in these lean days. As such it was so good to see so many women of the community out to do what they do best, have fun while helping friends.

This session was a reminder that the sun does inevidably shine after the rain. We planned the shoot weeks in advance and both were really looking forward to the day. That morning the sky looked ominous, but we opted not to cancel - just in case. Of course the sky held back until the moment we both arrived at the location! So we made lemonade... a little rain never hurt anyone possessing an umbrella! (I love prepared clients). My brave friend agreed to walk in the rain, with me safe and cozy under a shelter. I managed to capture some great stormy day images!

As great and interesting as the umbrella images were, we were both glad when the sun came out and gave us a bit more to work with.

Thank you for your fun spirit and willing attitude! It was a pleasure working with you... Enjoy your images!

Local artist, Fletcher Crossman,

Has been in process with his painting "The Apple Theif" at the CCforP studio for the past six weeks or so and I have had the privilege of documenting its progress...

It has been kind of a big deal around here, not only because it's, well, in a word - huge! But also because it is the subject of a documentary film for the ETV series, Southern Lens, which is a TV series featuring some of the foremost southern artists. Since this work has such a dynamic theme (Quite simply the politics of women in religion. Why they have traditionally had a secondary role in religion, therefore all other aspects of society...) coupled with such a dynamic size and visual imagery it makes for great TV!

It will be coming down tomorrow for the next leg of it's journey, I am sad to report... back to Fletcher's own studio in pieces for the addition of his "special sauce", his "magic fairy dust" so to speak. I am sad to see it go. I have gotten used to it being in the studio.

I wonder if I will have the luck to follow it there for further documentation... hmmm. I'll keep you posted!

After Douglas Cunningham and Chris Smith's Monday Night Lecture at CCforP I felt armed with enough knowledge to be dangerous at this years event. So I packed up my 300mm lens and off I went. A long list of unpronouncable names later, here are a few favorite images...

The Center for Women holds an invitational art exhibit each year with MUSC for the month of March, Women's History Month. This year I was graciously invited to contribute to the show. I have already mentioned my beautiful (and brave) friend 'Danger', who modeled for me on the beach. What better way to show the power and spirit that is woman, than with a picture of a beautiful and strong woman...

Thank you the the Center for Women for the invitation.

And thank you again 'Danger' for being such a willing accomplice.

I had a blast being a part of little Lucas' 1st Birthday! It was a beautiful sun-shiny day in the most beautiful park downtown. The little guy was so lucky to be surrounded by such a crowd of family and friends to round off his first year. And the cake... oh the cake! I think I am going to have a smash cake for my next birthday...

My afternoon at Whole Foods looks like this...

As a creative person one of the scariest moments you can face is this:

Someone sees your work and likes it sooo much that they want you to do one just like it for them.

It's such a compliment that you can't say no... but you wonder, can you replicate the masterpiece they admire? At this point you wonder if you can even remember how you created it in the frst place. You were in the zone...the creative sweet spot and it seemed to just appear fully formed and beautiful - your new favorite work. Then comes the admiration. And the flattery. It all ends with the inevidable moment when you hear those terrifying words - 'Can you do that for me?'

'Of course!', you affirm. No one wants to think of themselves as a one hit wonder. The better choice is to decline, sighting individuality and mumbling something about being a one-of-a kind. Suggesting that you could taylor something to their needs/prefrences is a highly superior plan. But I haven't mastered that speech yet...

So off I go to try to replicate this... ... with vegitables.

Danger Beach

I had an idea for an abstract/conceptual image for an Invitation Art Exhibit that I have been asked to be a part of in March... so I called up an adveturous friend of mine and said, " Would you like to dress in incredibly uncomfortable clothing, climb precarious rock mounds and look like an idiot to all passersby in ridiculous poses at the beach tommorrow morning at dawn?" To my surprise and astonishment - she said yes! Well, maybe that's not exactly how the conversation went, but that's kinda what happened.

Being the pensive, thoughtful type I can't help but notice that this image is representative of what happens when we are open to spontaneity and impulse in our lives something beautiful invariably happens.

Hearty thanks to you, my dear Danger for your participation in my crazy, daring vision! Your willingness to be in the moment is truly refreshing.

The idea of "Project 365" is nothing new, it's been around for ages. But it never intrigued me. Until this year...

I like the idea of a collection or a photographic journey. I have felt first hand the satisfaction of creating a product in incrimental steps and being proud of the finished result. I am loking forward to the satisfaction of having my first photographic collection at end of this year. My rules are a bit lax; a new picture for each day, it is not necesary for the image to have been taken on the day but it must have been taken with in thirty days of the day posted (a girl's gotta have standards).

And so I embark on a journey with 365 steps... and I invite you to follow along.

I'll post the images here for your enjoyment, however I will be posting them with captions and quotes on my flickr page so have a look and feel free to comment on your favorites!

I had a meeting with a trusted friend and advisor last week. We talked about all things photography and I asked a few questions about her experiences with portfolios. What makes the best and strongest impact on someone who has sees hundreds of these, I wanted to know. She looked through my work and told me a few stories, but it all really came down to this: Remove all emotion from the decision making process.

Ok, I thought. I can do this. I'll be ruthless and cruel. Only strongest survive! Me and my Darwinian dreams. They didn't last very long. There I was in the middle of a mess of images trying to decipher my best work, bewildered. I was feeling like a mother having to tell all but a select few of her children that they are ugly, useless and will not amount to anything in this world. How will I ever decide?!

It's been a week. I am still not finished. Each time I sit down to complete the task I have a different idea about how to proceed. But I am beginning to embrace the organic nature of the process. I like the idea that my growth can be reflected in almost real time...

So the picture above is an ad card that I was playing with. It contains a few of my all time favorites. Portfolio worthy, if I do say so myself. Off I go to try again.

I have chosen these Eyes as my opening image because I find it representative. Photography is appealing to me because I can show you how I view the world. I can edit out all of the chaos and the ugliness to selectively capture the beauty that is inherant all around us. This is what I most enjoy photographing... hidden beauty.

Being a creative person I am always interested in trying new things and finding new boundaries to push with my art. I have chosen this forum to share all of this (the good, the bad, the ugly...) with you. I look forward to this little corner of my world being the place where I can chat away about my photographic journey; successes, 'opportunities for growth', funny stories, new interesting information and general musings.
